عن الحرب وغضب الرب

قلتُ له:

-كنتُ لأؤيد قرار الحرب هذا لولا أمرين:

الأول: لقد احتضنتُ شظايا حياة مرضاي المحطمة، من صدمات الحروب.. وأصواتهم المرتجفة تروي قصصًا لم يكن لأيّ تقرير استراتيجي أن يُهيئني لها

الثاني:  رأيتُه بأم عيني يتكشف في سوريا، ما يُسمى بالاستبدال “الليبرالي” الذي وعد بالتقدم ولكنه جلب المجازر، محاكم التفتيش، مزيداً من النزوح و تبريرات للموت والغدر!. ما حاربنا من أجله تبدد إلى رماد.. لم يترك وراءه سوى التساؤلات والحزن.

علي كان منهكاً، مشتتاً بين معضلات موروثة قسراً، وشعاع أمل أخير، يدخل صندوقه الأسود كصوت أم حانٍ عندما ينقطع التيار الكهربائي في الشرق الأوسط الملعون:

- الحرب لا تنتهي في ساحات المعارك، ولا بورقة لجوء أو حماية دولية.. الحرب تتغلغل في الروح وتبقى هناك، و أرواحنا جميعًا مرتبطة بطرقٍ تدهشك.. لن ينجو من الحروب أحد.. لم ينجُ من الحروب أحد!

I said to him:

-I would have supported this decision for war, were it not for two things:

First: I have cradled the shattered fragments of my patients’ lives, the lives broken by the traumas of war. Their trembling voices recounted stories for which no strategic report could ever have prepared anyone.

Second: I witnessed with my own eyes, unfolding in Syria, what is termed a “liberal” replacement: a movement that promised progress yet delivered massacres, inquisitions, further displacement, and justifications for death and treachery! The very cause we fought for dissolved into ash, leaving behind nothing but unanswered questions and sorrow.

Ali was exhausted—torn between dilemmas thrust upon him against his will, and a final glimmer of hope that pierced his “black box” like the soothing voice of a tender mother when the power fails in this accursed Middle East:

-War does not end on the battlefield, nor with a refugee application or a grant of international protection. War seeps deep into the soul and remains there. And all our souls are intertwined in ways that would astonish you. No one escapes war unscathed; no one “ever” escapes war.
